Make dashboards interactive

Static dashboards are now commonplace and a certainly a step up from trying to interpret data in its raw form. They allow statistical information to be conveyed in a simple and visual format that is easy to interpret and provides a focus on the key information at a glance.

The value of dashboards however, increases dramatically once you make them interactive. I have very rarely seen a dashboard presented for the first time without a request coming back to delve into more detail into one area or to apply some filtering often resulting in the data analyst going away to produce the next iteration of the dashboard.

An interactive dashboard can provide many benefits including personalisation, access to real time insights, data drill downs but most valuable of all data exploration potential. Data exploration, can necessitate a learning curve for users but this can be overcome with basic data literacy training and through data analysts and dashboard designers finding a user-friendly and intuitive level of interactivity in the design of the dashboard.

I have also found that democratisation of data and driving up data literacy in an organisation leads to an environment where data exploration becomes the norm.
