Gartner has placed Generative AI at the ‘peak of inflated expectations’ on the hype cycle so FOMO on the AI wave is at an all time high. It does feel however that there is a lot of experimentation going on but a hesitancy to move to production. What are some of the reasons for this:
Lack of talent and expertise with skilled ai professionals in high demand
Ethical concerns & regulation – with businesses finally reaching a level of maturity with data governance and data protection, AI has bought along a new minefield to navigate
Demonstrating ROI and tangible benefits can be difficult particularly where AI is utilised to enhance existing services and solution as opposed to creating new ones.
Infrastructure challenges – establishing robust systems capable of handling AI requires strategic levels of investment beyond the traditional computing footprint already available in organisations, e.g. increased storage and computational power.
Addressing bias, fairness and AI hallucinations or investing effort in mitigating against the risk of these.
It does feel the leap of faith required to move into production with AI is somewhat greater than previous technical innovations whether due to the above reasons or perhaps a more fundamental basal human fear of being replaced but AI or losing some relevance. I however believe that the potential benefits will far outweigh the investment and work required to overcome these challenges. Interested in what others think?
